Nitrate Reducing Bacteria

Nitrate reducing bacteria (NRB). This group of bacteria has been considered “helpful” since it can outcompete sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) preventing the formation of H2S. Injection of nitrate into reservoirs and systems has been a method used to mitigate souring caused by sulfate reducing bacteria. However, the nitrite generated by the metabolic activity of these bacteria can promote corrosion depending on its concentration and the environmental conditions, so regulating and keeping these bacteria under constant supervision is important to prevent future complications. Nitrate reducing bacteria are a very diverse group and can be found in soils and groundwater.
