Manganese Oxidizing Bacteria

Manganese Oxidizing Bacteria/Microorganisms (MOB/MOMO). Even though this group of bacteria is not well known, it is starting to become more relevant in MIC. Most manganese oxidizers interact a lot with iron oxidizing bacteria and they also form mineral deposits that form oxygen-depleted zones for more aggressive organisms like sulfate reducing bacteria.  Many species of bacteria can be categorized as manganese oxidizers and iron oxidizers due to the fact they can oxidize (source of energy) either metal depending on their environmental conditions and their respective concentrations. One example is the genus Leptothrix.
