MIC and the microorganisms responsible for it

  • Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion, MIC, can be caused by a significant number of  different microorganism like bacteria, archaea, fungi, and others. Since most of these organisms can be found in almost every environment, this type of corrosion can present in oil rigs, oil wells, treatment plants, refineries, pipelines, and many other structures.

  • It is important to know that each environment is unique and the conditions could favor certain microorganism over others. These microorganisms do no act alone either, there can be multiple species of bacteria interacting and causing localized corrosion in metallic structures. Most of these microorganisms have been categorized in different groups based on the chemical substances they metabolize, “breathe” or secrete.
